2008 Subaru Legacy Types of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Press Release:2.5 i • 2.5 i Special Edition • 2.5 i Limited • 2.5 GT Limited • 2.5 GT spec.B • 3.0 R Limited
· Midsize sport sedan model line spearheaded by new Legacy 3.0 R Limited, the first-ever 6- cylinder Legacy model for the U.S. market.
· Revised exterior styling, enhanced performance and interiors and sedan-only model line characterize Legacy for 2008.
What’s New for 2008
· All Legacy models are sedans for 2008 (all wagons are now in Outback line).
· The 3.0 R Limited is the new flagship Legacy model, positioned above 2.5 GT spec.B; powered by 245-hp 6-cylinder Boxer engine with SI-DRIVE and featuring 5-sped automatic transmission with SPORTSHIFT, steering
wheel paddle shifters and rev-matching downshift blipping control; Bilstein Sport Suspension.
· All models: Revised front and rear styling with all-new front sheetmetal, a larger grille opening, new front and rear bumper fascias, and new headlights and taillights.
· Naturally aspirated 2.5-liter Boxer engine provides enhanced torque and improved fuel efficiency and is PZEV and EPA SmartWaycertified.
· Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability system available on more models.
· Revised 5-speed automatic transmission on turbo and 6-cylinder models enhances performance and shifting response; models with this transmission include VDC.
· Rear suspension revised for improved ride comfort.
· Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) standard on all models.
· Redesigned instrument panel and revised interior fabrics.
· Tilt/telescopic steering column standard for all models.
Electroluminescent gauges, formerly featured only on turbocharged 2.5 GT Limited, are now also included in the new 3.0 R.
· Remote keyless entry with integrated ignition key standard for all models.
· On premium models, redesigned steering wheel offers additional control buttons for audio system, cruise control, multi-information display and SI-DRIVE mode.
· Pre-wired for Satellite Radio (XM or SIRIUS).
Key Facts
· Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick Gold.
· The SI-DRIVE system on 2.5 GT Limited, 2.5 GT spec.B and 3.0 R Limited models enables three distinctly different modes of vehicle performance characteristics by regulating the engine control unit (as well as the transmission control unit in automatic transmission models), and by fine-tuning the electronically controlled
throttle. ‘Intelligent’ mode reduces engine torque and maximum power and switches to a more relaxed throttle response curve and can also help boost fuel efficiency in certain driving situations. ‘Sport’ mode provides
powerful, linear acceleration. ‘Sport Sharp’ mode modifies the engine’s electronic throttle mapping to deliver lightning-quick throttle response and more power sooner.
· Legacy 2.5 GT Limited, spec.B and 3.0 R Limited models feature quicker steering ratio; brake system uses larger front rotors than naturally aspirated Legacy models, as well as larger and ventilated rear rotors.
· Standard front seat side impact air bags, side curtain air bags and intelligent dual-stage deployment front air bags. Active front head restraints can help reduce the potential for whiplash injury in a rear collision, and a
safety brake pedal system can help reduce lower leg injury in a frontal collision.
Standard 4-wheel-disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).
· Three types of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive used in Legacy line: Models with manual transmissions use a viscous-coupling locking center differential to distribute the power 50:50 front to rear. Slippage at either set of wheels sends more power to the other set. Models with 4-speed automatic transmission utilize an
electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch to actively control power distribution. Legacy 2.5 GT Limited equipped with the 5-speed automatic transmission and the Legacy 3.0 R model use Variable Torque
Distribution (VTD), which manages power distribution using a planetary center differential and an electronically controlled continuously variable hydraulic transfer clutch. VTD normally sends more power to the rear
wheels to enhance handling agility, and it continuously adjusts power distribution in response to driving and road conditions.
· Touch-screen navigation system standard on 2.5 GT spec.B and 3.0 R Limited; available for 2.5 GT Limited with automatic transmission.
